Galapagar City Council has renewed its contract with FCC Medio Ambiente for the management of its urban services

  • The company has been awarded two separate tenders with a combined order book value of €58 million.

Galapagar City Council has renewed its trust in FCC Medio Ambiente by awarding it both the contract for waste collection and street cleansing and the contract for parks and grounds maintenance. Both services, which the company has been providing in the municipality since 2005, employ a total workforce of around 90 people and will serve a population of almost 37,000 inhabitants. They represent a combined order book value of €58 million, with a duration of twelve years for the waste collection and street cleansing services and five years for parks and grounds maintenance.

Sustainability plays a central role in this new chapter, with the introduction of over 50 newly acquired vehicles, some of which are electric, as well as the electrification of most of machinery equipment. This modernisation reinforces the shared commitment of Galapagar City Council and FCC Medio Ambiente to protecting the natural and urban environment.

Technological innovation is another key focus, thanks to the implementation of the VISION integrated digital management platform, developed exclusively by FCC Medio Ambiente. This tool enables the management of routes and tasks, the tracking of waste generation by type, the monitoring of vehicle performance and the optimisation of data utilisation, which facilitates the sharing of information and ensures more efficient and transparent communication with the municipal team and the public.

The waste collection service handles almost 20,000 tonnes annually and has 15 newly acquired vehicles. A dual-loading collection system is being introduced to replace the previous side-loading model, with the consequent upgrade of around 1,200 bins for residual, organic, packaging and paper/cardboard waste. New services are also being introduced, such as door-to-door collection of pruning waste from households. As for the household waste recycling centres service, a new mobile recycling centre will be set up and three local recycling centres will be set up. The existing permanent facilities are also being refurbished.

Street cleansing services will be provided by 34 newly acquired machines and vehicles, 60% of which will be zero-emission electric vehicles. There will also be a replacement of 400 litter bins across the municipality and the introduction of a grass dewatering machine.

As for parks and grounds maintenance, the service covers around 300,000 square metres of green spaces and involves the care of 6,140 trees throughout the municipality. Tasks also include the maintenance of children’s play areas and sports facilities, the drawing up of an urban tree management plan, and the development of an annual integrated pest and disease management programme.

Social sustainability is of particular importance in the new contract, which provides for the implementation of an annual communication and public awareness plan aimed at actively involving local residents in the care and conservation of their local environment.
