La Oliva entrusts FCC Medio Ambiente with the management of its urban services

  • The award of the contract consolidates FCC Medio Ambiente’s presence in Fuerteventura and reinforces its commitment to the island’s sustainable development.
  • The new contract introduces a fifth fraction bin, an electric fleet and AI-based technology to optimise the management of urban services.

La Oliva Town Council (Las Palmas) has awarded FCC Medio Ambiente the new contract for waste collection, street cleansing and beach cleaning in the municipality for the next ten years. The contract is worth around €63 million and consolidates the company’s presence on the island of Fuerteventura, where it already provides services in most municipalities and manages the Zurita Environmental Compound and the island’s sellective waste collection.

The new contract involves a workforce of over 140 professionals and strengthens the material resources, the mechanisation of operations and the sustainability of services compared with the previous management.

Among the key improvements is the introduction of a modern fleet of vehicles and machinery, reflecting a clear commitment to sustainability and electrification. The service will feature electric street sweepers and high-pressure washers, support vehicles with a ‘Zero Emissions’ label, and systems designed to reduce water consumption and emissions. The proposal also includes the introduction of separate collection for organic waste via a fifth fraction bin, with over 500 new units, and the launch of home composting initiatives to promote the circular economy.

Digitisation is another of the pillars of the proposal, with the roll-out of a comprehensive management platform that will enable real-time monitoring of operations using GPS systems, RFID technology and artificial intelligence. These tools will facilitate route optimisation, the detection of incidents and the monitoring of services, thereby improving operational efficiency and the ability to respond to the municipality’s needs. In addition, residents will have access to a phone app and new communication channels for reporting and tracking incidents, requesting the collection of household waste and interacting directly with the service.

The collection service will handle around 18,700 tonnes of waste annually and will significantly strengthen the municipality’s operational capacity. More than 1,400 bins will be installed for the general waste fraction, increasing the available bin capacity by over 30%, and new equipment and resources will be introduced to optimise collection frequencies and better meet the needs of the city’s various urban and tourist centres.

Street cleansing, which covers more than 160,000 linear metres of streets, will be stepped up through 26 sectors of daily manual sweeping, supported by mechanised teams, ongoing maintenance services and night-time street washing, with particular attention paid to the tourist centres of Corralejo and El Cotillo.

The contract also covers the comprehensive cleaning of the municipality’s beaches, including the urban beaches of Corralejo, the Great Beaches in the Corralejo Dunes Natural Park and the beaches of El Cotillo, with permanent staff throughout the year and additional staff deployed specifically during the summer season.

With this new contract award, FCC Medio Ambiente reinforces its commitment to the sustainable development of Fuerteventura and consolidates its position as a strategic partner to the island’s local authorities in the provision of essential urban services.
