FCC Medio Ambiente refuerza su presencia en Fuerteventura con la adjudicación de los servicios urbanos de Pájara (Las Palmas)

  • The services will be staffed by around 100 employees and will involve a major upgrade of technology and the vehicle fleet.
  • The new contract is designed to make the municipality a benchmark for excellence and modernisation on the island, in line with the current challenge facing the region and the tourism sector.

Pájara City Council (Las Palmas) has awarded a joint venture led by FCC Medio Ambiente the new contract for the city’s waste collection, street cleansing and the cleaning of municipal facilities for the next ten years. With this contract, worth €48 million, FCC Medio Ambiente consolidates its position on the island of Fuerteventura, where it already provides services in most municipalities and manages the Zurita Environmental Compound and the island’s separate waste collection scheme.

The new Waste Collection, Street Cleansing and Facility Cleaning service represents an innovative, sustainable and citizen-centred model, which integrates advanced technology, environmental sustainability, operational efficiency and social commitment. The project is designed to position the service as a benchmark for excellence and modernisation at both municipal and island level, and incorporates significant improvements aimed at optimising resources and reducing environmental impact. These include the addition of more than 20 newly acquired vehicles and pieces of equipment, including electric and hybrid units, as well as the construction of a state-of-the-art central depot with self-consumption photovoltaic systems. Furthermore, a network of strategic logistics bases with universal accessibility will be established to minimise travel times, fuel consumption and noise and air emissions.

Innovation is another cornerstone of the contract, with the centralisation of comprehensive service management on the VISION digital platform, developed exclusively by FCC Medio Ambiente. This will enable real-time monitoring of fleets and tasks, full tracking and traceability of incidents, continuous optimisation of routes and resources, and the integration of operational data, as well as facilitating real-time interaction with requests from residents and the municipal team. This approach transforms the service into a model of smart management applied to urban cleaning, enhancing operational efficiency, transparency and responsiveness.

As for waste collection, which handles over 9,000 tonnes annually, the service covers residual waste, bulky items and waste of electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE). The new fleet incorporates 2 and 4-cubic-metre electric compactors for local services and door-to-door collection, representing a significant step forward in sustainability and service quality, tailored to the area’s actual needs and its tourist-oriented nature.

The street cleansing service covers the municipality’s 150 kilometres and will feature new vehicles, including electric and plug-in hybrid units, as well as 100% electric auxiliary tools such as brush cutters and leaf blowers.

Meanwhile, the cleaning of municipal premises will cover 16 facilities, including administrative offices and educational centres, and incorporates sustainability criteria, such as the use of environmentally friendly products.

The contract also incorporates a strong social focus. FCC Medio Ambiente, together with its Special Employment Centre, FCC Equal, will ensure the integration into the workforce of people with disabilities and other groups at risk of exclusion. Furthermore, awareness campaigns will be developed targeting the general public, residents, the commercial sector, major waste generators, the educational community and the tourism sector, with the aim of fostering shared responsibility and promoting care for the urban environment.
