In May 2026, ECOMESA completed the installation of the new sorting line specifically designed for the processing of bio-waste at the La Campiña Environmental Recycling Complex (Loeches), a project funded by the European Union through the NextGenerationEU funds as part of the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan.

The facility has been designed to ensure that separately collected bio-waste undergoes a completely dedicated process at every stage of its treatment, including pre-treatment, composting and finishing. Until now, the finishing of compost from separate collection shared infrastructure with the bio-stabilised material from the residual fraction, which necessitated separate operations and complex cleaning tasks between processes.

The new line has a treatment capacity of 20 tonnes per hour and has been integrated into the CMR’s finishing hall, enabling completely separate circuits to be maintained for compost and bio-stabilised material. This configuration eliminates the risk of cross-contamination and improves the final quality of the compost produced.

Key equipment installed includes a screw feeder, a trommel screen, a density sorting table with a system for separating heavy and light materials, internal conveyor systems, dust collection and filtration equipment, and CCTV cameras for process monitoring and control.

Thanks to this initiative, the La Campiña Environmental Recycling Complex will be able to process selectively collected bio-waste in a fully segregated manner, improving the value of the compost produced and reducing the amount of waste sent for final disposal. The facility serves the municipalities belonging to the Mancomunidad del Este and forms part of the Community of Madrid’s strategy for the continuous improvement of waste treatment and recovery infrastructure.

Furthermore, the project has been carried out in accordance with the European principle of ‘Do No Significant Harm to the Environment’ (DNSH), contributing to the mitigation of climate change, increased resource recovery and the promotion of the circular economy.

The completion of this facility marks a further step forward in the sustainable management of municipal waste and the production of high-quality compost, reinforcing FCC Medio Ambiente’s commitment to innovation, operational efficiency and the transition towards a more circular and sustainable model.
