Oviedo renews its trust in FCC Medio Ambiente for the care of its parks and grounds

Oviedo City Council has awarded a joint venture led by FCC Medio Ambiente the contract for the maintenance, upkeep and improvement of the parks and grounds of the city. The contract, which began this October, represents an order book value of €19.1 million for the next four years, with a possible one-year extension. FCC Medio Ambiente has been providing this service since 2007 and has been present in the city since 1968, when it was awarded the waste collection and street cleansing contract for the first time. The service provided is highly appreciated by the people of Oviedo, as it came first in the survey carried out by the Organisation of Consumers and Users (OCU from its acronym in Spanish).

The service will have a staff of around 100 people and will take care of over 200 hectares of green areas, around 9,500 units of lined-up trees and 16,700 units in green spaces. One of the fundamental pillars of the service is the attention paid to the sustainability of the tasks. 70% of the vehicles and 100% of the service's machinery have ECO or Zero Emissions labels, including 100% electric, Compressed National Gas (CNG) or hybrid equipment, which will contribute significantly to the company's and the City Council's concern to reduce the carbon footprint and noise pollution; in short, to the environmental improvement of the city. In addition, there are plans to install solar panels on the service's facilities to encourage self-consumption.

Among other improvements, this renewal aims to reduce the generation of plant waste by increasing high-quality recycling in the mowing of meadows and lawns, reusing pruning waste in the form of shredding or mulching for use in shrub beds and 'Finnish tracks', and minimising the harmful effects of phytosanitary treatments through greater use of endotherapy for the most common treatments, such as protection against the red palm weevil and the pine processionary. In terms of water consumption, the current irrigation system will be modernised.

The company is also committed to a technological and innovative service, for which it has different digital tools that facilitate the work and its performance. The services will be organised and monitored through VISION, a comprehensive digital management platform developed exclusively by FCC Medio Ambiente that makes it possible to interact in real time with service incidents, residents' requests and the municipal team.

In line with FCC Medio Ambiente's social commitment and its promotion of inclusion and equality in access to employment for people from vulnerable groups, the company will collaborate with the Lares del Norte Special Employment Centre.
