The new contract involves the renovation and modernisation of the existing waste treatment facilities with the aim of increasing the recovery of recyclable materials and thus reducing the amount of waste deposited in landfill.

FCC Medio Ambiente renews the management contract for GESPESA's facilities in Badajoz

GESPESA (Gestión y Explotación de Servicios Públicos Extremeños, S.A.U.) has once again awarded FCC Medio Ambiente the contract for the operation, maintenance and preservation of the facilities attached to the Badajoz Management Area 4 for the transport and treatment of non-hazardous household and commercial waste. FCC Medio Ambiente has been providing this service to GESPESA since 2005, serving a population of approximately 243,000 inhabitants in 36 municipalities of the province, such as Badajoz, Jerez de los Caballeros and Olivenza. The order book value of the new contract for the next 15 years amounts to over €100 million.

The facilities manage around 110,000 tonnes of waste per year from the Residual, Bulky and Light Packaging fractions and boast a staff of 65 people. The aim of this new contract is the total renovation and modernisation of the ecopark facilities and their conditioning for the treatment of the Separate Collection of the Organic Fraction (FORS from its acronym in Spanish). The entire fleet of vehicles and mobile machinery will also be renewed.

Showcasing GESPESA's and FCC Medio Ambiente’s commitment to promoting self-consumption and the use of energy from renewable sources in all its facilities, the degasification network of the ecopark's controlled reject deposit will be improved to produce electricity from biogas, and photovoltaic solar panels will be installed on the roof of the warehouses.

The management of the Badajoz Ecopark also includes the operation of the Household Waste Recycling Centre located there, the Jerez de los Caballeros transfer station and the carrier lorries in the Valencia de Alcántara and Alburquerque areas.

The contract includes an investment of €56.6 million for the renovation and modernisation of the facilities, which is expected to be completed in 18 months. Among other actions, this investment covers the construction of two new mechanical treatment lines, one for the FORS and the other for the automatic selection and classification of comparable recyclable materials for the Residual and Light Packaging fractions; a new line for the manufacture of Solid Recovered Fuel (SRF) from non-recyclable materials for energy use in cement plants; and new modules for the differentiated biological treatment of organic matter from the Residual and FORS fractions.
