FCC Medio Ambiente Iberia publishes its ninth biennial Sustainability Report aligned with the SDGs

FCC Medio Ambiente Iberia, leading company in the management of environmental services and as it has been doing since 2006, has just published its ninth Sustainability Report, aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) prioritised by the organisation and verified by an independent external entity that certifies the conformity of its content with the requirements and principles established by the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI).

Under the slogan “Leading the Era of Change”, the report highlights the progress made in the 20-22 Action Plan and presents the main challenges of its new Sustainability Action Plan 23-26, within the framework of its Sustainability Strategy 2050, which will mark the company's development over the coming years. The strategy is based on four axes: Environment (circular economy, climate action and biodiversity protection), Social (human resources and society), Excellence (smart management, innovation and responsible value chain) and Governance (risk management, ethics and anti-corruption).

As a framework for this report, in 2022 the company reached a turnover of €2,006.8 million, with a gross operating profit of €306.4 million and a backlog of €8,258.3 million. It has achieved 15.1% growth in the last three years on the basis of sustainability and has invested 8.6 million euros in R&D&I between 2021 and 2022. FCC Medio Ambiente currently serves more than 32 million inhabitants in 3,700 municipalities in Spain and Portugal.

Regarding the progress made on the commitments established in the 20-22 Action Plan, the report figures that 79.2% of the commitments have been achieved and 9.4% are in progress. Among the most relevant milestones its worth highlighting the commitment to the circular economy, with the renewal of adhesion to the Pact for the Circular Economy and a 28.9% increase in materials recovery. In terms of efficiency in the use of resources, there has been a 35.3% increase in the consumption of renewable energies (2020-2022) and a 25% increase in water consumption from alternative sources.

In the fight against climate change, the company avoided the emission of 3,333,990 tonnes of CO2e last year and obtained the triple ‘Calculo-Compenso-Reduzco’ (“I Calculate - I Reduce - I Offset”) seal, awarded by the Ministry for Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge, for the third year running. FCC Ámbito, the group's industrial waste management company, received the Calculo-Compenso seal for the first time.
