FCC Medio Ambiente renews its commitment to the services of Salamanca

The Salamanca City Council, city where FCC Medio Ambiente has been delivering services since 1975, has once again placed its trust on FCC Medio Ambiente for the street cleansing, waste collection and renewal and operation of the light packaging sorting plant contract. The total order book value amounts to €231.6 million for the next 12 years, starting on 1st October 2022.

One of the highlights of the contract is the renewal of all the machinery. Practically 100% of the equipment will be electric and Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) powered , bringing to light the Salamanca City Council’s commitment to a more sustainable and environmentally friendly city.

With respect to the waste collection service, the company attends 143,269 inhabitants and collects annually 60,000 tonnes of all waste fractions. It will have a workforce of around 100 people and 45 newly acquired vehicles, mostly ECO-labelled. The service will implement the selective collection of the organic fraction (door-to-door, fixed and “put-on/put-off” containers) and will add a door-to-door collection service for residual waste from the hospitality industry.

For its part, the street cleansing service covers 337.29 kilometres of streets and will have a workforce of 340 people. In total, more than 200 new machines will be acquired, such as mechanical sweepers, motor vacuum cleaners, cars, self-propelled trolleys and assisted tricycles, half of which will be CNG-powered and the other half electric. It has the most innovative technology equipment, such as dual equipment for simultaneous sweeping and washing and self-propelled vacuum cleaners with the "FOLLOW ME" system.

The Light Packaging Sorting Plant serves the entire province of Salamanca, more than 327,000 inhabitants. The new contract includes the complete refurbishment and automation of the plant, with an investment of €2.655 million, and its subsequent operation. It will have a processing line for light packaging with a capacity of 3 tonnes per hour up to 4.5 tonnes per hour. The new equipment incorporates the most advanced technology on the market, such as optical sorters, film aspirators, a ballistic sorter and automatic storage units. The stockage area will be enlarged and access to the staff changing rooms will be improved. In addition, the plant will be equipped with photovoltaic panels for self-consumption and the mobile machinery will be renewed, including the implementation of an electric telescopic forklift. All of this translates into a reduction in costs, an increase in recycling rates and a decrease in the generation of non-recyclable waste and, therefore, in the need for final disposal in a landfill. The plant currently processes a total of 5,000 tonnes of recycled packaging materials per year.

For the comprehensive management of the services the digital platform VISION, developed exclusively by FCC Medio Ambiente, will be used, which allows for the control, monitoring and optimisation of the works and makes it possible to interact in real time with the requests of the residents of the municipality. In addition, the contract includes a Customer Service Plan to inform residents on the services, developments and improvements, giving vital importance to sustainability and raising awareness through the implementation of a participative and inclusive service model, supported by the latest technologies.

The contract also includes agreements with foundations in the area that specialise in hiring people at risk of social and labour exclusion, which once again shows FCC Medio Ambiente's commitment to the most vulnerable groups.
